Over her 34 - year career, Cheryl Frazier has coached students from the south suburbs to national and state championships in speech. She is an extraordinary speech coach who has held various titles as an administrator at Southland since its founding including dean of students, academic counselor, and currently director of test adjudication.
Through her work, Mrs. Frazier as changer the lives of our students and generations to come. She works tirelessly to make sure that our children have a voice. She teaches them how to use that voice to tell their stories. Under her tutelage, shy, reserved students become bold, articulate speakers, and actors & actresses that move audiences to uproarious laughter and literal tears.
Her contributions to the Charter school community through founding the Southland Speech program and its success, statewide and nationally are immeasurable. When our children succeed, we all succeed. Our community succeeds and takes great pride in the accomplishments of our children and supports the work that we do as a school.
Southland has qualified students for State competitions every year since 2012 and earned six state championships. Southland is the only school in state history to win state championships three consecutive years. Since 2013, Southland has qualified students to compete in the National Speech and Debate Tournament every year, winning the National Championship in Poetry Reading in 2015 and three other national finalists.
Not only are speech team members winning in competitions, they are winning in the classroom and life. Four out of Southland's five valedictorians since 2017 have been members of the speech team. Speech team members are always in the Top-10 students in the graduating class. They're attending Stanford, Yale, Duke, and the University of Pennsylvania.
All of these extraordinary accomplishments are because of the leadership of Mrs. Cheryl Frazier and her expectation of excellence for our students. For Mrs. Frazier, coaching her speech students is more than a job. It is a ministry - a ministry she has established a wonderful legacy.
